FLASH GORDON

Created in 1933 by one of the comic strip syndicates as an answer to the wildly popular Buck Rogers, Flash went Gold overnight. In fat. more than characters, Flash and Buck became phenomena and are true media legends.

Starting with the comic strips that ran for over thirty years, Flash eclipsed Buck at the box office with three serials to Buck's one. Both found a home on the radio, in print and on TV. Flash re-emerged in the movies in the 1980's. Flash Gordon movie serial episodes have been played on TV for over 20 years. During the Golden Age of the Sapce Cadet. Flash had a syndicated TV show that went nationwide. In the late 1970's Buck made a comback under the guiding hand of Glen Larsen. The Flash and Buck toys were legion.

Though Buck was a bit more exotic, Flash clearly got the better end of things in the media and name recognition.

In a way, there are two Flash Gordons: the one that dealt with the planet Mongo and the spaceman Flash Gordon of the TV series starring Steve Holland and the "funnypapers". In the classic Flash, the rocketship was just a means to an end.
